Evaporative Cooling Melbourne
Evaporative Cooling Systems & Installs Melbourne
Evaporative cooling is one of the most economical ways to cool a Melbourne home on a dry summer day. Beyond Heating & Cooling can install evaporative cooling systems, and we’ll give you honest advice on whether it’s the right choice for your home — or whether a refrigerated system would serve you better year-round.
Evaporative Cooling — How It Works and Who It Suits
Evaporative cooling works by drawing warm outside air across water-saturated pads. The water evaporates, cooling the air naturally before it’s circulated through ducts and vents throughout your home. The unit sits on the roof and connects to ceiling vents — similar in layout to a ducted refrigerated system. It’s an economical system to run and works well in Melbourne’s dry summer heat. However it has important limitations that are worth understanding before committing to an installation. Evaporative cooling works best when:
- The weather is hot and dry — Victorian typical summer conditions
- Windows and doors can be left slightly open to allow airflow
- You don’t need it for heating — evaporative systems provide cooling only
Evaporative cooling is less effective when:
- Humidity is high — common during Melbourne’s stormy summer periods
- You want whole-home climate control in both winter and summer
- You want the flexibility of a sealed, consistent environment
Is Evaporative Cooling Right for Your Home?
For some Melbourne homes evaporative cooling is a practical, cost-effective choice. For others — particularly those wanting year-round comfort from a single system, a refrigerated reverse cycle system is the better investment.
Before recommending either option, we’ll ask about your home’s layout, how you use your home in summer, and whether you already have or need a heating solution. The honest answer isn’t always the most expensive one.
The Cooling Alternative Worth Considering
Most Melbourne homeowners comparing evaporative and refrigerated cooling end up choosing refrigerated reverse cycle, and the VEU rebate is a big reason why.
The VEU rebate does not apply to evaporative cooling. It applies to electric reverse cycle systems only, and can be worth up to $5,000. Once the rebate is factored in, the upfront cost of a ducted reverse cycle system is comparable to evaporative, and for that price you get a system that heats and cools, works in any weather, and handles every season from one unit.
A ducted reverse cycle system isn’t affected by humidity, doesn’t require windows open to work, and provides whole-home heating as well as cooling. Running costs are slightly higher than evaporative, but the year-round versatility and compatibility with solar panels offset that for most Melbourne households.
If your existing evaporative system has reached end of life, it’s worth getting a quote on both options before deciding. The numbers may surprise you.
