VEU Rebate Explained: What You Get When You Switch from Gas Heating

The VEU (Victorian Energy Upgrades) rebate is real money — and in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, we see it knock $3,000 to $5,000 off the cost of upgrading to a new reverse cycle system. Here’s exactly how it works, what it covers, and whether you qualify.

What Is the VEU Rebate?

The Victorian Energy Upgrades program is a state government initiative that subsidises the cost of switching from gas to electric heating. When you remove an existing gas heating appliance and install a new reverse cycle system, you’re eligible for a rebate. It gets applied at point of sale — you don’t need to chase it yourself after the job.

One thing that catches people off guard: the VEU rebate only applies when you’re removing gas heating. Adding a new system to a room that never had heating? The rebate doesn’t apply. Worth knowing before you start collecting quotes.

How Much Is the VEU Rebate Worth?

The rebate varies based on system size and the number of outlets. Here’s what our pricing looks like with the VEU rebate already deducted:

  • 12.5kW system, 6 indoor outlets: From $6,300 all-inclusive
  • 17kW system, 10 indoor outlets: From $7,300 all-inclusive

All-inclusive means supply, installation, and removal of your existing gas system. No surprises on the invoice.

Without the rebate, the same systems would cost $3,000–$5,000 more. The rebate is calculated on the greenhouse gas reduction from switching gas to electric — larger systems removing more gas attract a higher rebate.

If You’re Getting Multiple Quotes

Make sure you’re comparing the same thing. Some quotes show the pre-rebate price and list the rebate as a separate line item. Others (like ours) show the final number after the rebate is already deducted. A quote that looks cheaper might not include installation — or might not be accounting for the rebate at all.

Ask every installer: is this all-inclusive, and does it have the VEU rebate already applied?

Does Every Home Qualify?

In Melbourne’s northern suburbs, the main qualification is you need to be swapping out an old gas heater for an electric heating and cooling option. It cannot be an upgrade – it has to be a swap over from gas.

If your property has never had gas heating, or you’re just adding cooling to a room , we can do the work but be aware that the VEU rebate probably will not apply.

What We Install

We install ducted reverse cycle systems across Craigieburn, Greenvale, Roxburgh Park, Mickleham, Donnybrook, Beveridge, and surrounding northern Melbourne suburbs. New installations only — we don’t repair or service existing systems.

If your gas system has broken down and you need a repair, we do NOT do repairs or servicing.
But if you’re ready to replace it entirely with a new reverse cycle system and take the VEU rebate while you do it, that’s exactly what we do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the VEU rebate apply to everyone in Victoria?

The VEU program is Victoria-wide, but the rebate specifically applies when you’re removing an existing gas heating appliance. Replacing ducted gas heating with a new reverse cycle ducted system qualifies.

Do I have to apply for the rebate myself?

No. We handle the VEU paperwork as part of your installation. The rebate is deducted from your invoice — you pay the final amount only.

How long does installation take?

A typical ducted reverse cycle installation takes one to two days, depending on home size and the number of outlets.

What suburbs do you cover?

Craigieburn, Greenvale, Roxburgh Park, Mickleham, Donnybrook, Beveridge, and the wider northern suburbs of Melbourne. Call to confirm if your suburb is in range.

Can I get the VEU rebate for split systems, not ducted?

We only install ducted systems, so if you’re after splits, we’re not the right fit. For ducted gas-to-electric upgrades with the VEU rebate, we can help.
