Why Is My Ducted Air Conditioning Not Cooling?

What Affects Ducted Air Conditioning Performance?

There are a few common reasons a ducted system stops cooling properly, some are simple fixes, others are a sign the system is reaching the end of its life. Here’s how to tell the difference.

Residential Heating Cooling

Common Reasons Your Ducted Aircon Isn’t Cooling

The thermostat settings

First thing to check. Make sure the system is set to cooling mode, not fan only or heating, and that the target temperature is set below the current room temperature. It sounds obvious but it’s surprisingly common — especially after winter when settings get changed and forgotten.

The outdoor unit is blocked

The outdoor condenser unit needs clear airflow to do its job. If it’s surrounded by overgrown plants, covered in leaves, or hemmed in against a fence or wall, it can’t expel heat efficiently and the whole system suffers. Clear at least a metre around the unit and see if performance improves.

The filters are clogged

Ducted systems pull air through return air filters. When those filters get clogged with dust and debris, airflow drops and the system has to work much harder to cool the same space. Most filters can be removed and cleaned — check your system manual for the location. It’s usually a grille somewhere in the ceiling or a hallway wall.

The system is low on refrigerant

If the system is running but barely cooling, it may have a refrigerant leak. This is a job for a licensed refrigeration mechanic — not something you can check or fix yourself. Signs include the system blowing air that’s cool but not cold, or ice forming on the outdoor unit.

The ductwork is leaking

Over time, ducting can develop gaps, especially in older homes where the ductwork has been through years of expansion and contraction. If cool air is escaping into the roof space rather than reaching your rooms, the system will struggle no matter how hard it runs..

When to Stop Repairing and Start Thinking About Replacement

This is the real question most people are trying to answer.

Ducted systems generally last around 15 years with normal use. A quality Daikin system, well maintained, can push to 20 years. But once a system starts needing regular repairs — refrigerant top-ups, electrical faults, compressor issues — the repair bills add up fast, and you’re spending money keeping an inefficient old system running when a new one would cost less to run and come with a warranty.

A rough guide:

  • Under 10 years old — worth repairing in most cases, the system has plenty of life left
  • 10–15 years old — depends on the fault and the repair cost, get a quote and weigh it up
  • Over 15 years — seriously consider replacement, especially if this isn’t the first problem
  • Over 20 years — replacement almost always makes more financial sense

Installing Ducted Air Conditioning

What Does a New Ducted System Cost?

If your system is ageing and you’re considering replacement, a new ducted reverse cycle installation with Beyond starts from $6,300 for a 12.5KW system up to 6 outlets, through to $10,380+ for larger premium systems — all inclusive of GST, full ductwork replacement and grilles.

The VEU rebate only applies if a gas heating appliance is also being removed. If your home runs gas ducted heating alongside the old ducted cooling system, replacing both at the same time qualifies for the rebate — and it’s applied upfront, no paperwork required.

If there’s no gas appliance being removed, the rebate doesn’t apply — but we can still install a new system at a competitive price. Contact us for a free in-home assessment and fixed quote.

If your home has an evaporative cooler rather than a refrigerated ducted system, a straight evaporative-to-evaporative replacement starts from $4,400. Or if you’d prefer to upgrade to refrigerated reverse cycle at the same time — which heats and cools year round — we can quote that too. More detail on the evaporative changeover page.

The Running Cost Argument for Replacing Early

Even if your old system is still limping along, it’s worth thinking about what it’s costing you to run.

A ducted system that’s 15 years old runs on technology that’s a generation behind current inverter systems. Modern systems use significantly less electricity to produce the same amount of cooling. According to Victorian government figures, switching to an efficient all-electric system can save the average Melbourne home around $1,900 per year — and that’s before factoring in solar.

If your old system is costing you extra to run every month on top of repair bills, the payback period on a new system is shorter than most people think.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Ducted Aircon Is Blowing Air But It’s Not Cold — What’s Wrong?

The most likely causes are low refrigerant, a clogged filter restricting airflow, or a blocked outdoor unit. If clearing the area around the outdoor unit and cleaning the filters doesn’t help, you’ll need a licensed refrigeration mechanic to check the refrigerant level. If the system is over 15 years old, it’s worth getting a replacement quote at the same time before spending money on repairs.

How Long Should a Ducted Air Conditioning System Last?

Most ducted systems last around 15 years with normal use. A well-maintained Daikin system can reach 20 years. Once you’re past that point, the system is running on old technology, costs more to run, and repairs become more frequent and expensive.

Is It Worth Repairing a Ducted System That’s Over 15 Years Old?

Generally not unless the repair is minor and inexpensive. An ageing system that needs major work — compressor, refrigerant, electrical components — is likely to need more repairs in the near future. A new system will be more efficient, cheaper to run, and come with a warranty. Get a replacement quote and compare it against the repair cost before committing.

Do I Need to Replace the Ductwork When I Get a New System?

At Beyond Heating & Cooling we always replace the ductwork as part of every installation. Old ducting is often the wrong size for a new system, leaks air, and after years of use it’s dusty. New ducting designed for the system means better performance and cleaner air from day one — and it’s included in our all-in prices.

Does the VEU Rebate Apply If I’m Just Replacing an Old Ducted System?

Only if a gas heating appliance is also being removed as part of the job. If your home has gas ducted heating alongside the old ducted cooling system, replacing both qualifies for the rebate. If there’s no gas appliance being removed, the rebate doesn’t apply — but we can still install a new system at a competitive price.

Can Beyond Heating & Cooling Repair My Existing System?

No — we specialise in new installations only. If your system needs a repair, you’ll need a licensed HVAC technician or refrigeration mechanic. But if you’re weighing up whether it’s worth repairing or replacing, we’re happy to give you a free assessment and a replacement quote so you can make an informed decision.
